Chapter 1: Pulled by the Tides
The golden sun climbed slowly over the horizon, turning the sky into shades of gold and red. Adrian stood at the edge of the shore, letting the cool waves brush over his feet. Today was his sixteenth birthday, and the world seemed to celebrate with him. He stayed there for a while, listening to the rhythm of the ocean and feeling the warm breeze, before turning back toward the palace.
Breakfast was a grand affair, with tables filled with fresh fruit, sweet pastries, and golden platters of food fit for royalty. Adrian ate with his parents, laughing and enjoying the moment, before asking the servants to send the leftovers to the village orphanage, a small tradition that made him smile.
The day passed quickly. Servants hurried through the palace, preparing for the evening celebration. Tonight, the grand ship would sail out into the open sea for a party in Adrian’s honor. It marked not just his birthday, but the start of his apprenticeship under his father, the King. In three years, Adrian would take the throne, and the weight of the crown would rest on his shoulders.
But tonight, Adrian wanted to enjoy life, to forget about responsibility and just feel free.
As the sun dipped low in the sky, the ship left the dock. Its golden sails caught the light as it glided into the open sea. Adrian stood on the deck, the salty wind tangling his dark hair, and felt a rush of excitement.
Below deck, the party was already alive. Music played, young women twirled in beautiful gowns, and Adrian danced with as many of them as he could. His laughter filled the air as he spun them around, but as the night wore on, he found himself standing to the side, watching the merriment from afar.
He glanced out the small round window, letting his mind wander. For a moment, he thought he saw a face in the waves, a pale, delicate face framed by golden hair. He blinked, and it was gone.
“It’s time,” his father said, resting a hand on his shoulder.
Adrian followed him to the upper deck, where fireworks erupted in the night sky. Brilliant bursts of color lit up the ocean, and Adrian smiled as he greeted his guests, shaking hands and kissing cheeks. The sea stretched endlessly around them, dark and calm under the glow of the fireworks.
The music played on, and the lanterns flickered as the night grew late. But then, without warning, the sky began to change. Dark clouds rolled in, and the calm sea turned restless. Adrian felt the first drops of rain on his skin and looked out toward the horizon, where flashes of lightning lit up the distance.
The storm came quickly, fierce and unforgiving. Waves slammed against the ship, sending sprays of water high into the air. Adrian struggled to keep his balance as the deck tilted beneath his feet.
“Adrian!” his father shouted, his voice nearly drowned by the howling wind.
A massive wave crashed over the side of the ship, drenching Adrian and knocking him to the ground. He scrambled to his feet, his heart pounding, as the ship groaned and creaked under the storm’s assault.
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck the main mast, splitting it in two. The wooden beam came crashing down, and Adrian barely managed to throw himself out of its path. His shoulder throbbed with pain, but he couldn’t stop to think about it.
Across the deck, he saw his parents gathering with the crew, their faces pale and frantic. His father’s eyes met his, wide with panic, and Adrian tried to move toward them. But before he could take a step, a wall of water rose up behind him.
The wave hit like a hammer, knocking Adrian off the ship and into the cold, dark sea. The water swallowed him whole, pulling him into its depths. He fought to reach the surface, but the current was too strong. Saltwater burned his eyes and lungs as he thrashed against the relentless pull of the ocean.
The darkness wrapped around him like a shroud, and his strength began to fade. His chest ached for air, and his vision blurred. He felt himself sinking deeper, deeper into the endless black.
And then, just as his thoughts slipped away, he felt something, warmth, soft and comforting, like a hand brushing against his cheek.
Who are you? .
Chapter 2: Eyes of the Ocean
Warmth. That was the first thing Adrian felt as he opened his eyes. A soft, golden light surrounded him, and for a moment, he wasn’t sure if he was still alive. His body ached, his lungs burned, but the gentle touch on his cheek made it all fade into the background.
“Are you alright?” The voice was soft, melodic, and when Adrian turned his head, he was met with the most beautiful face he’d ever seen.
She knelt beside him, her golden hair cascading over her shoulders, framing her bright turquoise eyes. Adrian tried to sit up, groaning as pain shot through his shoulder. The girl placed a steadying hand on his chest.
“Don’t move,” she said, her voice a whisper but firm. “You’ve been through enough.”
“Where…?” Adrian managed, his voice hoarse. He realized he was lying on soft sand, the sound of waves lapping against the shore nearby.
“You washed up on the beach,” she explained. “I found you.”
Adrian blinked at her, still trying to process the situation. “You… saved me.”
The girl gave him a small, shy smile. “It wasn’t just me. We helped.”
Adrian tilted his head slightly, noticing other girls in the distance, their figures moving gracefully along the shoreline. But his attention snapped back to her, to the way her gaze seemed to pierce through him, as though she could see everything he was, his fears, his pain, his desires.
“What’s your name?” he asked.
“Celia,” she replied, her blush deepening. “And yours?”
“Adrian.” He tried to smile, but winced from the pain.
Celia leaned closer, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. Her touch was light, almost hesitant, but it sent a jolt of warmth through him.
“You’re hurt,” she murmured, her fingers grazing the torn fabric of his shirt. Adrian’s shoulder throbbed where the fabric stuck to his skin, damp with blood. “I need to clean this.”
He watched as she stood, her figure outlined against the golden glow of the setting sun. She moved with a grace that seemed almost otherworldly. She returned moments later with a small bowl of water and a cloth, kneeling beside him once more.
“This might sting,” she said softly, meeting his gaze.
Adrian nodded, his breath hitching slightly as she began to clean the wound. Her hands were gentle but firm, and despite the pain, he found himself watching her face, the way her brows knit together in concentration, the way her lips parted slightly as she worked.
“You’re not like anyone I’ve met before,” he said, his voice low.
Celia’s hands stilled for a moment, her eyes flicking up to meet his. “Is that a good thing?”
Adrian chuckled lightly, wincing at the movement. “I’d say so.”
A silence fell between them, heavy but not uncomfortable. Adrian couldn’t help but reach up, brushing his fingers against hers. Celia looked down at their hands, her cheeks flushing a deeper shade of pink.
“You’re brave,” she said, almost as if to herself.
“And you’re beautiful,” Adrian replied without thinking.
Celia’s eyes widened slightly, her lips parting as if to protest, but Adrian didn’t let her. He lifted a hand to her cheek, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her jaw.
“Thank you,” he said quietly, his gaze locked on hers. “For saving me.”
Her breath hitched, and for a moment, the world around them seemed to disappear, the sound of the waves, the distant calls of the other girls, even the pain in Adrian’s shoulder. There was only her, and the way her eyes seemed to hold all the light in the world.
Slowly, Adrian leaned forward, his lips brushing against hers. It was soft at first, tentative, but when she didn’t pull away, he deepened the kiss, pouring all his gratitude, his longing, his pain into that single moment.
Celia’s hands rested lightly on his chest, her touch hesitant but warm. She kissed him back, her lips soft and inviting, and Adrian felt a spark ignite within him — a fire that chased away the cold of the ocean, the fear of the storm.
When they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathless. Celia’s cheeks were flushed, her eyes brighter than ever.
“We should… get you somewhere safe,” she said softly, her voice trembling slightly.
Adrian nodded, though his gaze lingered on her. “Lead the way.”
Celia helped him to his feet, her arm wrapped around his waist for support. Adrian leaned on her more than he wanted to admit, but he couldn’t deny how good it felt to be close to her.
They walked along the beach, the golden light fading into twilight. Adrian felt a strange sense of peace despite everything he had been through. But as they neared a cluster of small, white buildings on the cliffside, a shadow passed over Celia’s face.
“What is it?” Adrian asked, his voice tinged with concern.
Celia hesitated, her grip on his waist tightening slightly. “You’ll understand soon,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Adrian frowned but didn’t press her. Something in her tone sent a shiver down his spine, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that whatever lay ahead would change everything.
